As the 'mirror contact' for the LDP, I need to point out a few things:
- Currently, the "other formats" for various docs are *not*
part of the LDP mirror (they are kept in a different ftp'able
area on metalab). In other words, the SGML source, plain text,
Postscript, etc. document variants stay on metalab.
I'm not saying this is the correct thing to do, but I wanted
to state that this is how it currently works. I have been asked
by various mirror owners to have (at the very least) the plain
text versions of the HOWTOs available on the mirrors, in addition
to the currently-mirrored HTML. This is something we may wish to do.
Suggestions/comments are needed on this issue.
- I have an email list of all mirror owners, but contacting and
getting responses is another story. Some are very good about it,
others I am still hearing from after sending an email 3 weeks
ago. Every few months I run a check of all mirros, looking for
outdated or inoperable sites, then I send those owners a friendly
"reminder" email.
wrt restructuring:
Personally, I would like to maintain something fairly close to
what we have now (structure-wise). People link-to and ftp
these documents. They have come to expect the structure to be
as it is. As Deb Richardson mentioned, many people rely on this
structure.
I would ask people to re-examine the proposal that Greg Leblanc
sent out, and I added to. I think that provides some needed
structure and clarity (READMEs, clean-up); allows us to integrate
DocBook (and other document source formats), PDF, etc.; but does
not involve any truly massive changes. IMHO.
best regards,
